The Perfect Chip, The Perfect Balance

For Jennifer Davidson, founder and creator of Capital Chips, it started with a quest for balance. The mother of two was working as a teacher and felt like she was spending more time with other kids while her own children were getting whatever she had left at the end of the day. The unlikely solution? A beloved tortilla chip recipe she’d been making for friends and family for years.

The catalyst happened while sitting in a brewery eating subpar chips. She thought to herself, “I could do better than this.” With encouragement from those same friends and family who’d been enjoying her tortilla chips for years, Jennifer returned to the brewery, armed with her homemade chips packed in a brown paper bag. The chips were a hit, and the rest, as they say is history.

Capital Chips was officially born in 2017, initially working out of a backyard shed turned commercial kitchen. Over the past two years the popularity of Capital Chips has spread and the tasty chips can now be found in 30 locations, from downtown Richmond to Louisa, Ashland to Powhatan.

The tasty chipmaking businesses soon outgrew the shed and this fall, Capital Chips celebrated its new commercial kitchen location, tucked away among the greens at Independence Golf Course.

“If you’re a small business owner you know that there’s so much sweat equity that goes into (opening a business),” said Jennifer speaking to a crowd on hand to celebrate the ribbon cutting of her new space. “It is the magic of motherhood, that is the reason that I do this.”

Capital Chips successfully achieve that much sought-after balance – for both their owner and the consumer. Thicker than the average chip, they can do the heavy lifting while topped with anything from buffalo chicken dip to delicate salsas.

And that empowering “She Shed” where it all began? A framed picture of it sits in the new kitchen.

While the Independence Golf Course location doesn’t feature a retail location, a full list of chip purveyors can be found here. For more information on Capital Chips please visit their Facebook Page.
