Tucked away off of Broad Street, Skrimp Shack’s newest location (it’s fourth in the Richmond area) sits like a secret seafood mecca, serving up the flavor of a southern summer fish fry, without the hassle.
Skrimp Shack, best said with a deep southern drawl, was founded in Newport News in 2011 – where its founders got their start selling fresh fish straight from the docks out of the back of a truck.
Today, the quick service eatery touts the fattest fish sandwich around – the most popular being the Whiting sandwich. In addition to whiting, Skrimp Shack sandwiches can be made with catfish, flounder, mahi, tilapia, haddock, and for landlubbers, chicken. For a little Louisiana flare, try a Skrimp Po’Boy which can also include crabmeat or catfish. Sandwiches are served simply but can be dressed up with lettuce and tomato, or topped with one of the remoulade-esque sauces that sit atop each table. They can also all be served grilled rather than fried.
Not in a sandwich mood? Try fish or skrimp tacos or step it up a notch with one of Skrimp Shack’s dinner platters. Up the southern ante with a side or two – options include mac ‘n cheese, collards, cole slaw, hushpuppies, fried okra, green beans, and both sweet and traditional fries.
Feeding a crowd? Skrimp Shack also offers family and party platters – perfect for hosting gatherings this summer.
