Six Local Eats We're Taking on the Road this Summer

By all predictions, the summer of 2021 is slated to be the summer of the road trip. Americans are traveling again, but most are still somewhat reluctant to pile into a plane so we’re charting our course to somewhere within driving distance and hitting the road.

There’s something so quintessentially American about piling into the car and setting off on a great adventure and explore new places, and obviously, new local businesses.

But on the road? On the road we’re all about skipping the drive-through and packing some upgraded road trip snacks. Whether you’re heading to the mountains, or hitting the beach, here are a few of our favorite bites from RVA to take with you on the road this summer.

Union Market Sandwich

The drive-thru has nothing on Union Market's gourmet sandwiches. With both breakfast and lunch/dinner menus, as well as vegan options, this gourmet market is the perfect place to grab sandwiches on your way out of town. It also is convenient for stocking up on drinks and other snacks you might want for your trip.

Baked Goodies from Whisk

Is it even a road trip if you don't enjoy some sweet treats along the way? Pop into Whisk and stock up on the most delicious assortment of muffins, cookies, croissants,  brownies, and more.

Capital Chips

Does anything compare to the crunch of a good chip while you're on the road? Capital Chips' perfect chips are delicious on their own and their bite sized version is perfect for road trips. If you're not the one behind the wheel, we suggest pairing it with a tub of Salsas Don Sebastian. Both are available at a wide variety of stores throughout the region.

Lammar Marie Gourmet Popcorn

Sweet? Spicy? Salty? Whatever you're in the mood for Lammar Marie's gourmet popcorn has a flavor to hit the spot. From snickerdoodle to dill, chicken and waffles to pretzeltopia - the biggest challenge will be picking just one.

All the Breads from Montana Gold

If the past year has taught us one thing, it's that people seriously love banana bread. But if you're like us and can never get it quite right, be sure to pick up a loaf from Montana Gold for some roadtrip nibbling. Not quite ready for banana bread again? Their pumpkin bread and seasonal breads are equally as delicious.

Smoothie or Juice from Ellwood Thompson's Local Market

If you'd prefer to sip your way into vacation mode, hit up Ellwood Thompson's juice bar for a filling smoothie or green juice that can power you all the way to your destination.
