Shop Local During Virginia's Tax Exempt Weekend

Shoppers will once again be able to take advantage of Virginia’s Tax Free Weekend in preparation for back to school (whatever that may look like this year, kids will still need supplies!) as well as the ramping up of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The annual weekend, to run August 7- 9 this year, allows consumers to purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and EnergyStar and WaterSense products without paying tax.  

What Qualifies?

School Supplies and Clothing:

Items commonly used by students in their studies (excluding computers) are considered eligible for exemption. Items must be sold for $20 or less but do not need to purchased for school use or in connection with a school activity. Keep it local at Ball Office Products.

Tax exempt clothing encompasses apparel and typical footwear as well as select items including wedding apparel and leotards which retails for $100 or less. Sporting equipment and items not considered appropriate for everyday wear are not exempt.

Keep it local for the kids at Little Nomad, Clover, Nana Belle, and 1Z 2Z 3Z, and for the the adults check out Irresistables, La Grande Dame, Sweetest StitchFrances Kahn, Very Ashley, Ashby, Clementine, and Franco’s Fine Clothier

Don't forget shoes from Saxon Shoes and formal wear from Lex's of Carytown and Runway Couture.

Hurricane Preparedness Items:

Virginia sees more hurricane-related storms towards the end of the season making Tax Free Weekend an ideal time to stock up on supplies including portable generators ($1,000 or less per item), gas-powered chainsaws ($350 or less per item), chainsaw accessories ($60 or less per item), as well as other specified hurricane preparedness items.

Keep it local at Pleasants Hardware or Ashland Hardware.

EnergyStar and WaterSense Products:

Items bearing an EnergyStar or WaterSense sold for $2,500 or less are exempt during Tax Free Weekend. These items must be used for personal use and may include air conditioners, ceiling fans, light bulbs, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, sink faucets, toilets, and landscape irrigation products.

Keep it local at Lipscombe Appliance or BatteriesPlusBulbs.
