Puritan Cleaners' Petra Glover Named 2021 Richmond Christmas Mother

The 2021 Richmond Christmas Mother is a familiar face to many in the Richmond small business community. Petra Glover, wife of Puritan Cleaners’ President and CEO, Gary Glover, has been named to the illustrious role for the 2021 holiday season.

Managed by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Richmond Christmas Mother Fund originated in 1935, an evolution of the Richmond News Leaders Empty Stocking Fund and the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Good Fellow Club. Today, the Christmas Mother Fund, in partnership with the Salvation Army, The Community Foundation, and FeedMore, provides food and gifts for children and families.

“Our goal is to make sure that everyone’s Christmas is joyful,” said Glover. That joy means having a warm meal and a few gifts for the holidays. “This year has been especially hard for people for food.”

Glover is no stranger to the program. Puritan Cleaners’ Coats for Kids program has been a longtime partner with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which matches children and seniors with community members who procure gifts for the holidays. Puritan’s various locations throughout Richmond collect, clean, and repair thousands of coats every year for distribution to Salvation Army's Angel Tree clients.

A former schoolteacher, Glover is the perfect fit for a role that so often appears at children’s events - from school coat drives to the Richmond Christmas parade to local cotillion holly balls.

“When we go to elementary and middle schools for coat drives, and we see these kids who want to give and are so concerned about others being warmed,” said Glover, “you see these little seeds of giving being sown. It makes you feel so good about Richmond.”

In addition to the Salvation Army and FeedMore, the fund is also dispersed to 40 other local non-profits serving children, adults, seniors, as well as military. Each year the Christmas Mother also selects a beneficiary, and Glover has chosen the Maymont Foundation.

“Maymont is so great because it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor; you can enjoy it no matter how much money you have,” she said.

Donations to the Richmond Christmas Mother also support the Henrico and Chesterfield Christmas Mothers and can be made via this link.  Last year the fund collected $376,000.

Coats for Kids donation coats may be dropped off at any Puritan Cleaners location to be cleaned and repaired.
