Meet a Business is a series featuring the person behind some of your favorite locally-owned businesses.
What is your name?
What's your hometown?
What is your business name?
How many years have you owned/managed your business?
What did you want to be as a child?
An Artist. Being a wedding planner definitely felt like that in my younger days! Now it's incredibly heavy in logistics and slightly less in "event design" but still very creative overall.
What is the most popular item you sell?
Weekend Wedding rentals where the couple can extend their rental time and enjoy the weekend instead of feeling so rushed to cram everything into just one day!
What local business can you not live without?
Trend. at the River Road II Shopping Center. The visual team there handles so many things for us - signage, vinyls, client gifts, personalization, brand swag, etc. They are such a blessing!
In what ways has your business changed since COVID-19?
The wedding industry has been greatly affected by the pandemic shutdowns. We've now created more "turnkey" events including elopements, micromonies, minimonies, and smaller groups than the average wedding sizes a few years ago. Our company has adapted safety protocols and suggestions for our events to keep our clients and their guests safe.
What's the first thing you do every morning to set the tone for your day?
Check my email. lol. I wish it was something much more "balanced" like yoga, going for a walk, doing a devotional, etc. but it's currently just a very chaotic life so those 30 minutes of getting "ahead" on my emails at 6am help me feel better about what I have to tackle when I get to my desk after getting the kids ready and meeting contractors in the morning.
How did you come up with the name for your business?
The mansion was originally named River Run Manor, and we wanted to keep the River Run, but since many American's don't know the meaning of what a European Manor is, we opted to rename it "The Estate at River Run."
How did you get the idea for your business?
I've been a wedding planner with our company, Kim Moody Design, for 18 years and after working transiently for 16 years we were ready to settle into one location as a home base.
What does the world need more of?
A work ethic. :)
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To pause time so I could accomplish more of the workload on my plate and spend more quality time with my young children who are 4 and 6!
What's your favorite thing to do in Richmond when you're not in your business?
Kayaking on the River with our family or visiting the VMFA!
What was the first concert you ever attended?
The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers - I'm not sure which was first. :)
What do you love most about Richmond?
The River!! We are located right on the James and try to Kayak, Tube, Swim, and enjoy it as much as possible!
What's the best thing about being a local business owner?
I've never done anything else. I've been self-employed since I was 22, so I don't really remember anything any differently. We often joke - "Why work 40 hours a week for someone else, when you can work 100 for yourself for less of a salary?" Kind of funny, but sadly it's the truth.
