Meet a Business: Jade Multicultural Salon

Meet a Business is a series featuring the person behind some of your favorite locally-owned businesses.
What's your name?
Jaida Cureton

What's your hometown?
Richmond via Washington, DC

What is your business name?
How many years have you owned/managed your business?
What did you want to be as a child?
My lifelong dream was to be a salon owner and hairstylist. So I am living my dream.

What is the most popular item you sell?
The most popular service we provide is Color and Cut. The most popular retail product we sell is our Paul Mitchell product line.

What local business can you not live without?
I absolutely am a fan and supporter of Hot Yoga Richmond. My son and I have been yogis for the last 8 years and know we will be for the rest of our lives.

In what ways has your business changed since COVID-19?
My business was affected by COVID-19 as a result of Governor mandated shut down. All of our community members, clients and staff were in agreement with the Governors decision. Unfortunately on the 23rd of March, I was diagnosed with COVID-19. This diagnosis affected my business even more than expected because I was considered a long-hauler and fought this disease for 4 months and 14 days. Since we reopened we have had to reduce our occupancy significantly but we are able to rebuild and implement systems to enhance the customer experience.

What's the first thing you do every morning to set the tone for your day?
I practice a first 15 ritual. 5 minutes to express gratitude, 5 minutes to meditate and 5 minutes to pray.

What tool, object, or ritual could you not live without in your workday?
There are a few things I could not live without. I would say my Jade stone necklace, prayer and meditation.

How did you come up with the name for your business?
The name Jade came from the meaning of the Jade stone. The Jade stone is known to be the abundance stone. As a child I was raised around many Eastern philosophies and the jade stone being one of the most prominent in my upbringing. We were taught that the jade stone promotes healing, healthy relationships, strength, harmony and happiness.

How did you get the idea for your business?
I always knew I would be a salon owner from a child. I loved to see the way people felt when they were serviced in the salon and the opportunity to make people happy and whole through the art of beauty was something I wanted to be a part of. When I decided to open the business my mantra was from the great Bull Durham movie. "Build it and they will come."

What does the world need more of?
Grace and Love

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

What's your favorite thing to do in Richmond when you're not in your business?
I loved to shoot pool at the Greenleaf Pool Hall and ride my road bike on the Cap City Trail.

What's your hidden talent?
I have been told my many that I am a great writer. I need to make time to explore this because it is something I enjoy and creating stories is always a great release and a great escape for the reader.

What was the first concert you ever attended?
The first concert I attended was Prince in the Purple Rain tour at the Capital Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. My dad is a huge Prince fan and decided to share this experience with his daughter, girlfriend and her family.

Who do you look up to and why?
I look up to my mentor. My mentors name is Earnest Andrews. Mr. Andrews was the first African American to own a salon in Carytown. He has coined himself as the Martin Luther King of the beauty industry. He believes in serving anyone in the community and he believes in equality and equity.

What do you love most about Richmond?
I love that Richmond is growing into a more artsy and inclusive city.

What's the best thing about being a local business owner?
I love the support of my community members and the opportunity for growth.
