How One Couple Found Love, and Business Ownership at The Place
At 15 years old, Sarah Merritt took a part time job helping out with kitchen prep at The Place at Innsbrook, a full-service, family-owned and operated, special events venue in Glen Allen. Little did she know, that arbitrary job as a teenager would be the catalyst for both her professional and personal lives.
Around the same time, Ross Merritt was working for the same company as a bartender. As time went on, and Sarah moved on to waitressing, their paths eventually crossed more and more frequently until one day, they took it a step further and went on a date – only to discover they’d grown up on the same street in Richmond’s West End, attending the same schools, albeit a few years apart.
Exactly two years to the day after their serendipitous first date, Sarah and Ross, who’d eventually moved on to morning and evening managers, respectively, tied the knot – and naturally chose The Place to cater the special day.
In 2010, the Merritts completed the circle by purchasing The Place, following the existing owner’s retirement after 15 years in the business. After all, their knowledge, experience, and of course, that deep personal connection to the business was unrivaled.
Today, Ross and Sarah are celebrating 10 years of owning The Place at Innsbrook while The Place is celebrating 25 years in the special events industry.
The Place at Innsbrook has certainly seen its fair share of love stories through the years, though perhaps none quite as full-circle as the Merritts. The banquet hall offers two flexible spaces for weddings and events of all sizes, as well as an outside patio area – a favorite spot for wedding vows. While the connecting reception hall offers generous floor to ceiling windows – a rarity when it comes to such large spaces.
Beyond weddings, The Place’s flexible event space easily accommodates meetings ranging from 20 to 200, from corporate meetings and conferences, to celebratory banquets and fundraisers, and more, The Place’s locally-owned, one-stop-shop environment provides personalized attention to detail, while still providing all of the amenities and services of a larger facility – including a full-time chef. They also offer off-site catering services.
Consistently family owned-and operated for over two decades, these days Ross' brother, Matt, is also part of The Place's team and their eight-year old daughter, Libby, can often be found around the venue.
The Place at Innsbrook is located in Glen Allen, near the intersection of Cox and Broad. For more information visit them online.
