Four Local Ice Cream Shops To Jump Start Summer

After a long and cold spring, it feels as though the warm sunshine may finally be here to stay in Richmond. While technically summer doesn’t start for another month, Memorial Day Weekend often serves as the unofficial start of summer. Pool season kicks off, and nothing goes with pool season like a delicious scoop of locally made ice cream. To celebrate the unofficial start of what we’ll just call ice cream season, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite cool treats to get us through summer in Richmond.

Sweet Spot Ice Cream Cafe opened this past winter in Shockoe Bottom and is the perfect stop after hitting the Canal Walk or the Capital Trail. Featuring more than 48 different flavors of ice cream (plus gourmet flavored waffle cones!), as well as non-dairy options, coffee, as well as smoothies and other treats.

Created by a VCU alum, Ruby Scoops’ new shop on Brookland Park Boulevard in Northside is the first brick and mortar location for the small batch brand that got its start on the DC Farmer’s Market circuit. The premium ice creams and vegan-friendly sorbets come in a variety of rotating unique flavors including Cookie Butter, Black Sesame, Blueberry Basil Lemonade Sorbet, Red Berry Champagne, and Grasshopper Pie.

Gelati Celesti, perhaps the OG of the Richmond ice cream scene, isn’t slowing down in 2021! This local favorite is now scooping all over the Greater Richmond area, as well as Virginia Beach. Most recently, their Mechanicsville pop-up, which was offering pints and quarts only, went so well that as of this week guests will be able to purchase individual scoops.

For ice cream with a twist, NarWhals has you covered. Located in Carytown, NarWhals is Richmond’s first rolled ice cream shop. Forget ice cream toppings as you knew them, at NarWhals you can mix-in nostalgic tasty bites of Oatmeal Cream Pie, Honey Buns, Nutty Buddy, as well as traditional candy and fruit flavors.
